Back in November, as I was writing my novel, I decided I would read a novel a week in 2006. For some, this may not be much — standard fare for those who are well-read. Heck, my mom, in her peak reading days, got through five a week.
But for me, one those people who reads slower than a club-footed sprinter runs, the thought of getting through this many novels in a year sounded sort of lofty. We’ll see how it goes.
The trick has been deciding what to add to the list. I first headed to ebay, where box lots of books can be found on the cheap. I picked up close to fifty books for less than fifty bucks. A good start because I knew I wouldn’t read all of them. Pot luck boxes are just that: pot luck.
Then, with a wad of Christmas cash from various relatives, I headed to my local bookseller to grab some more. Bargains and Bestsellers. I got out of the store with about twenty books for less than $70. Another great haul.
To sweeten the list, my mom bought me a membership to the Hard Case Crime book club. Two pulps a month for twelve months. Yep. These are my ringers.
To round out the list for the year, I picked some off my shelf that I already own but hadn’t bothered to finish — or start in some cases.
So tomorrow I start. I’m now finishing what I’m currently reading — The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass — so I can start fresh with the new year. My plan for this blog is to update what I’ve started reading, when I’ve finished a book and what I thought of it along the way.
I’d love to hear your thoughts about what I’m reading, too.

I’ve actually set a new years resolution to do just that! I doubt i’ll be able to do it though. Considering using my MacBook and reading eBooks while commuting into work. Problem with that is that I don’t really like looking at the screen.
I’ve just begun reading / and re-reading the CS Lewis collection. Small books but really it’s just a warmup.
