James FreyBecause, apparently, they do.

From GalleyCat:

James Frey Sells Novel to HarperCollins
“The press release went out just before 5:30: James Frey has sold a novel called BRIGHT SHINY MORNING to HarperCollins, with publisher Jonathan Burnham sealing the deal.”

I’m curious to see how the book-buying public responds when it’s released next summer. Will we remember Oprah? Will we care about that he made up a bunch of shit, passed it off as true, and then pocketed a dump truck full of cash? Or have we moved on?

I’d like to know what you think. Leave a comment and let’s bat this one around a little.

Personally, I’d wager that it won’t do nearly as good as his previous book of lies. While I’m sure most people have forgotten, at least largely, about what happened with “Pieces” I doubt that the media will let the public forget it when the new book comes out.

Expect some serious coverage about this next year and me thinks the book loving crowd is not so forgiving.

At least I hope not…

Thanks for stopping by, Jonathan. I agree that the media won’t let us forget about Frey… at least they’ll try not to let us forget.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that the attention will pique curiosities… especially among the people who read MILLION LITTLE PIECES. And there were a lot of them, many of whom doubtlessly (steadfastly?) remain fans. Regardless of Frey’s glorious hoodwink, they contend he really did write a pretty good story. (I refuse to read it, by the way.)

It wouldn’t shock me in the least if this book sits atop the NYT for fiction.
